I am lecturer at the university of Cadiz and was Max's coordinator. I was pregnant when I met Max and when everything happened I was on maternity leave. One of my colleagues informed me about the accident and I met the family when they came to the faculty. Some months later another colleague found hidden among many documents, students' assignments, etc., a note that Max left under my door before Christmas. I have scanned the text and put it up in the blog, as I feel I should be doing something to honour him.
Sending very warm regards to his family and friends

Carmen sent a translation of the letter. It's not full of profundities, just a bread-and-butter letter, but it's a cheery note written before he came for Christmas, about his decision to stay in Cadiz for the second half of his Year Abroad instead of going to Costa Rica to teach football to city kids. We were rather relieved when he made that decision - staying in Cadiz seemed so much safer. He was doing so well there, he was happy and getting himself together and organising his life. He liked the people and the place.
Hi Carmen,
It’s Max O’Connell, the English student from Newcastle University. I’d like to talk to you, as I have decided to stay on for the second semester in Cadiz. I’d like to see you tomorrow but it’s impossible because I’m going to London in the afternoon. Would it be possible to contact you via e-mail next week. I talked to my university and they said that it is fine for them if I stay.
Here are my addresses:
I hope everything is fine with the baby, and that you had a good holiday.
Happy Christmas!
