This is a picture of Max opening presents at Christmas, which is when we'd see him most regularly. Our families would get together almost every year on Christmas or Boxing day. When he was a kid he'd be full of energy, but quiet compared to Rachel, and he'd sit on or hang on his Mum. In his teens he became more laid back and much more easygoing, and concentrated on making remarks attempting to shock his Mum instead.... He was interested in films and football from way back, so when he was about 14 I got him "The Goalkeepers' Fear of the Penalty" by Wim Wenders for a present - he was boggled, but kind of pleased as well, I think. We'd always be interested to hear about his film studies later, such as his detailed study of the implications for American society in "Die Hard", which I certainly hadn't taken out of it when I saw it!
More recently when we got together we'd hear about his adventures in the world of catering. It's funny to think of him done up in formal black and white waiter gear for some of the posh events, in contrast to his usual jeans and t-shirt. It was nice to see him coming out of his teens and having lots to say for himself on topics ranging from food to famine to feminism. It's just such a shame we won't get to hear more from him at future Christmases, but we'll think of him, I know.

I worked with Max at most of the catering events he did. trust me, dont be fooled by the formal wear...it felt more like a holiday camp than work...free booze (for those clever enough), working with your mates and an endless procession of good looking waitresses...max was in heaven.
